Memorial Park itself is the centerpiece of these central Houston communities. Larger than Lincoln Park of Chicago and Central Park of New York, Memorial Park is an outdoors enthusiast’s haven. Several miles of trails, used for walking, jogging, riding and biking, wind through the park’s grounds. The jewel of the park, however, is Memorial Park Golf Course. The course was renovated in the early 1990’s and remains one of the most popular municipal courses in the country with greater than 60,000 annual visitors.

Also located on park grounds is the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens and the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. The arboretum was established in the 1950’s and the nature center followed in the 1960’s. Both facilities protect the natural plant and animal species of the area from being harmed by urban development. Covering 155 acres, including five miles of walking trails, the site is educational and relaxing, even while surrounded by the activity of the city.

The Memorial Park site played an interesting role in Houston’s history. First a National Guard Camp, the site was converted to a U.S. Army training facility in 1917. The facility was known as Camp Logan, now the name used to refer to the residential community in the area. Camp Logan was an emergency training center for approximately 30,000 World War I soldiers. It was also the starting place of the Houston Riots of 1917, which resulted in the largest court martial in U.S. history.

Another local landmark of note is Rice University. Rice is a small, private institution with a full-time enrollment of about 4,500. Despite its size, Rice is extremely well-regarded in the academic and research communities. U.S. News and World Report rated the university in the Top Ten for its undergraduate engineering and bioengineering programs. Financial Times also recognized Rice’s MBA for Executives program as the best in Texas and the Southwest.
